The Neuroscience of Leadership

The Neuroscience of Leadership This is a 2-day facilitated workshop, with an outcome-based blend of information and facilitated group and individual tasks that is designed to optimise adoption of peak performance principles. The program combines military research on leadership and resilience with cutting-edge social neuroscience, physiology and psychology. There is also a strong emphasis on behaviour change, with a number of proven tools used to foster self-determination and long-term success of the participants.

There are 5 complementary parts that comprise the Neuroscience of Leadership and these are explored over 2 days:

  • Know Thyself
  • Optimise Energy and Decision-Making
  • Thrive Under Pressure
  • Engage and Influence Others
  • Driving Change

A number of optional tests are available to assess body and brain performance, including BioAge testing and functional brain assessments. The workshop can also be delivered over 1 day.

Paul conducted the 2 day ‘Neuroscience of Leadership’ training program for the Cisco Capital Asiapac/Japan Leadership Team in March 2010 – I personally found it extremely beneficial and six months later, I’m still practicing what I learnt – proof of a very good program! The messages and numerous practical tips were outstanding and several members of my team commented that this was the BEST training they had ever received.

Building a high performance team

This workshop is a unique blend of personal experiences and cutting edge research into both team dynamics and social neuroscience.Paul served 8 years as an Officer in the British Armed Forces and gained insights into the running of a high performance team, in the form of a Flight Squadron. He also served as a member of smaller teams that worked in highpressure situations, through his roles as an Airborne Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer and as part of a 4-man Searchand-Rescue Helicopter team.

Paul blends this experience with his insights from completing a Postgraduate Diploma in the Neuroscience of Leadership and the practical applications of working closely with senior executive teams in large organisations such as Medibank, Goodman Fielder, Iselect, SAP, CISCO and Ballarat and Casey City councils.

Participants complete a pre-workshop questionnaire to identify which areas to focus on in the workshop and additional coaching is provided if required.

Workshop Overview

DISCOVER – your health drivers. This section explores the interaction between genes and the ‘Big 4’ environmental choices that we make on a daily basis, and the resulting impact on our short-term and long-term physical and mental health. It equips individuals with the knowledge to make better lifestyle choices.

DESIGN – a success strategy. Knowledge without action will not lead to success, so this section covers the science of behaviour change, including change in the brain, motivation, willpower, goal setting, habits and rituals. It also provides a simple, effective, tried and tested behaviour change model and a number of tools to help create long-term success.

MOVE – to activate your genes. Exercise is a very powerful driver of gene expression, but not all exercise is equal. This section uncovers the best ROI in exercise and gives simple guidelines around maximising all aspects of the crucial physical activity triangle.

FUEL – your way to health. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek Physician who is regarded as the Father of modern medicine once said “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”. That turned out to be very sound advice, as we now that what you choose to put in your mouth every day has powerful impact on your gene expression. This section does a deep dive into nutrition and provides evidence-based recommendations and ‘food rules’ that can have a powerful impact on overall health and energy levels.

BUILD – resilience to stress. Our stress response systems evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to enable us to deal with certain survival threats. However, our modern world has created a host of new stressors that hijack our stress response systems and create a cascade of harmful responses. This section explores the good, the bad and the ugly of stress and the concept of resilience. It provides a range of practical tools to build resilience to stress and foster better work-life balance, including techniques used successfully by military special forces units and elite athletes.

GUARD – against damage. Ever wondered why you tend to eat more the day after a poor nights sleep? Or whether moderate alcohol is actually good for you? This section looks at a number of factors that impact on our physical and mental health, including alcohol, drugs, sleep, plastics and other environmental toxins. There are numerous tips and tools for reducing damage from our environmental choices, improving sleep quality and balancing out our indulgences.

ENGAGE – your brain. Discover simple ways to engage and develop your brain with a scientific exploration of mindfulness, the social brain, altruism and gratitude rituals. This section provides simple and effective tools to grow new brain cells, enhance mood, increase neuroplasticity and achieve a more deeply connected brain.

Beyond Resilience

Work-life balance was identified by a recent Mt Eliza Leadership survey to be the number 2 issue facing Australian managers today, and Australians reported suffering from extremely high rates of stress and distress in the last census.

In addition to this, the recent financial climate means that more businesses are undergoing change and are requiring their people to do more with less.

This has resulted in a demand for Resilience workshops, but few people really understand resilience. Most workshops focus on the psychology of resilience and whilst this is useful, it misses some key components and as a result, is usually ineffective.

Paul is a ‘pracademic’ when it comes to stress and resilience. He has completed rigorous ‘combat survival and resistance to interrogation training’ during his time in the military and has subsequently amassed many years of research into resilience as a physiologist and neuroscientist, leaving no stone unturned.

He also continues to practice what he preaches, having conducted a 3 week trek deep into the Amazon jungle where he participated in a Matses Indian rite of passage and recently became a professional boxer.
